Quick answer

Bra-Calculator.com turns two tape measurements into a starting bra size in three steps. It rounds your underbust to the nearest even inch for the band, subtracts underbust from full bust and rounds to a whole inch for the cup (each inch of difference is one cup step), then converts the result into US, UK, EU, FR/BE, AU/NZ, JP and KR sizing. Sister sizes move the band by 2 (or 5 in EU, FR, JP, KR) and shift the cup one step the opposite way.

Calculator method at a glance

Band = underbust, nearest even inchClamped between 24 and 60. No inches are added to your measurement.
Cup = bust − underbustRounded to a whole inch. One inch of difference equals one cup step.
7 sizing systemsUS, UK, EU, FR/BE, AU/NZ, JP and KR, calculated from the same base size.
Accepted rangeUnderbust 22–65 in. Bust-to-underbust difference up to 24 in.
Inches or centimetresCentimetres are divided by 2.54 before any other step.
Result = starting sizeConfirmed with band, gore, wire and cup-edge checks.

How the calculator turns measurements into a size

  1. Round the underbust into a band size

Your snug underbust measurement (converted to inches if you entered centimetres) is divided by 2, rounded, and multiplied by 2: band = round(underbust ÷ 2) × 2. That gives the nearest even band, limited to 24–60. A measurement of 33 in lands exactly between 32 and 34 and rounds up to 34.

  2. Subtract to find the cup

Full bust minus underbust is rounded to a whole inch. That number picks the cup letter: 0 in is AA, 1 in is A, 2 in is B, 3 in is C, 4 in is D, and so on. The letter sequence depends on the sizing system (see the cup table below).

  3. Convert to your sizing system and add sister sizes

The band and cup are converted to US, UK, EU, FR/BE, AU/NZ, JP or KR. The tool then shows one band down and one band up as sister sizes, with the cup shifted one step the opposite way to keep similar cup volume.

How sister sizes are calculated

Sister sizes keep a similar cup volume while changing the band. Going up one band size adds 2 (US/UK) or 5 (EU, FR, JP, KR) to the band and moves the cup one step smaller. Going down one band does the reverse.

MeasuredSmaller band sisterBase sizeLarger band sister

34.6 in underbust, 40.2 in bust (US)32G34DDD/F36DD

Try a sister size when the band feels loose or tight but the cups fit. The cups fit but band too tight guide walks through when each direction helps.

Why different bra calculators give different sizes

Two calculators can read the same tape measurements and return different sizes. These are the usual causes, and the first four are rule choices you can check here:

Source of differenceWhat this calculator doesWhy it changes the result
Band methodUses your measured underbust, rounded to the nearest even inch. No inches added. Some tools add several inches to the underbust, which raises the band and enlarges the cup letter.
RoundingEven band rounding, whole-inch cup rounding, halves round up.A 33 in underbust becomes 34 here. A tool that rounds down gives 32 and a different cup.
Cup definitionOne inch of bust-to-underbust difference equals one cup step.Tools that use other increments shift every cup letter.
Cup letteringSeparate US, UK, EU and JP/KR lettering, shown side by side.US DDD/F, UK E and EU F can be the same cup under different names.
Brand cutNot modelled. Brand sizing varies and needs a brand chart. The same base size can fit differently across brands.
Breast shapeNot measured. Only two measurements are used.Projection, root width and tissue distribution change how a size fits.

What the calculator can and can’t tell you

Treat every result as a starting size. The formula only uses two numbers, so it can’t see breast shape, root width, firmness or how a specific brand cuts its cups.

The calculator hides the result for inputs outside its range: an underbust under 22 in or over 65 in, a bust smaller than the underbust, or a bust-to-underbust difference above 24 in. It also adds a short fit note: for a difference under 2 in it reminds you to check that the cup edge lies smoothly, and for 6 in or more it points you to cup depth, wire width, side containment and band stability.

After you get a size, check it in a real bra: the band should sit level and snug, the centre gore should lie flat, the cups should be smooth with no spilling or gaping, and the straps should carry only a small share of the support. If something is off, the Bra Fit Problem Solver matches each symptom to a fix. Not sure how to measure? Follow how to measure your bra size first.

Worked examples: measurements to sizes

Each row below was run through the same rules as the calculator. Measurements are in inches, and the last column shows the smaller-band and larger-band sister sizes in US lettering.

40 / 47407 in40G40F90G38H / 42DDD/F

Two things stand out. The same measurements give different cup letters in different systems (a 5 in difference is DD in the US and UK but E in the EU), and a sister size always changes the band by a fixed step, so you can predict it by hand once you know the base size.

Rounding rules and edge cases

Most “my size is different here” questions come down to rounding. These are the rules the calculator applies:

  • Halves round up. An underbust of 33 in sits halfway between 32 and 34 and becomes 34. An underbust of 31 in becomes 32, and 29 in becomes 30. The same rule applies to the cup: a 4.5 in difference rounds to 5 in.
  • Only even bands appear. US and UK bands run 28, 30, 32, 34 and so on, so a result of 31 or 33 is never shown. EU, JP and KR bands step in fives and FR/BE bands step in fives from a different starting point.
  • Zero difference is AA. If your bust and underbust are the same, the cup index is 0 (AA). If the bust is smaller than the underbust, the calculator hides the result and asks you to recheck.
  • Band limits. The accepted underbust range is 22 to 65 in, but the band itself is held between 24 and 60. An underbust of 22 in therefore shows a 24 band, and one of 65 in shows a 60 band.
  • Very large differences. Cup letters run to T in the US, EU, FR, JP and KR tables and to MM in the UK and AU/NZ tables. Beyond that the last letter is shown with a plus sign.

Centimetre quick tables

If you measure in centimetres, the calculator divides by 2.54 and then applies the same rules. These tables show where the band and cup change over, so you can sanity-check a result without a calculator.

Measuring tips that affect these numbers are in how to measure your bra size. A difference of just 1 cm in the underbust can change the band, so measure twice.

The practical answer is to use a measured result as the first size to try, then adjust by sister size or style. If you want to see how other tools stack up, read best bra size calculators compared, and for the tape-versus-tool question see bra size calculator vs measuring tape.

Check the fit after you calculate

A calculated size is only useful once you test it. Work through these in order, because the band affects everything else:

  • Band: it should sit level around your back, feel snug, and stay put when you lift your arms. If it rides up, see bra band rides up.
  • Centre gore: the piece between the cups should lie flat against your breastbone.
  • Cups: the fabric should be smooth, with no spilling over the top or gaping at the edge.
  • Straps: they should stay on your shoulders without digging in, and should not carry most of the support.
  • Wires: they should sit flat against your ribcage, not on breast tissue.

If the cups fit but the band doesn’t, try a sister size. The sister-size comparisons for 32C vs 34C and 36B vs 34D show how the volume carries across bands.

Glossary of terms used on this page

TermMeaning
UnderbustThe measurement around your ribcage directly under the breasts, taken snugly with a tape.
Full bustThe measurement around the fullest part of the bust, with the tape level and not compressing the tissue.
Band sizeThe number in a bra size (the 32 in 32D). Here it comes from the underbust, rounded to the nearest even inch.
Cup indexThe whole-inch difference between bust and underbust, used to pick the cup letter.
Sister sizeA neighbouring size with a different band and a similar cup volume, such as 34C for 32D.
DDD / FThe US label for a 6 in difference. The UK writes the same step as E and the EU as F.
Starting sizeThe first size to try on, before you confirm fit on band, gore, cups, straps and wires.

Frequently asked questions

How does a bra size calculator work?

A bra size calculator compares two measurements: your underbust, which sets the band, and your full bust, which sets the cup. The difference between them, in inches, decides the cup letter. The result is a starting size to confirm with a fit check.

How does Bra-Calculator.com calculate band size?

It rounds your underbust measurement to the nearest even inch, between 24 and 60. A 31.6 in underbust gives a 32 band. No extra inches are added. Centimetre entries are divided by 2.54 first.

How is cup size calculated from bust and underbust?

Subtract underbust from full bust and round to a whole inch. Each inch is one cup step: 1 in is A, 2 in is B, 3 in is C, 4 in is D. Letters after D differ by system, for example US DD and EU E at 5 in.

What are sister sizes and how are they calculated here?

Sister sizes share a similar cup volume with a different band. This calculator adds or subtracts 2 from the band in US and UK sizing, or 5 in EU, FR, JP and KR, and moves the cup one step the other way. For 32D, the sisters are 30DD and 34C.

Why do different bra calculators give different sizes?

They use different rules: whether inches are added to the underbust, how measurements are rounded, which cup increments and letters apply, and whether sister sizes are shown. Brand cut and breast shape also change fit, and no two-measurement formula can capture them.

Is the calculator result my final bra size?

No. Treat it as a starting size, then check the band, centre gore, cup edges and straps in a real bra. Try a sister size if the cups fit but the band is too loose or too tight.

What measurements does the calculator accept?

Underbust from 22 to 65 inches, and a full bust no more than 24 inches larger than the underbust. You can enter inches or centimetres. Inputs outside that range show no result.

Does the calculator add 4 inches to my underbust?

No. It uses your measured underbust, rounded to the nearest even inch. Tools that add inches to the underbust usually return a larger band and a larger cup letter for the same measurements.

Why does a 33 inch underbust become a 34 band?

A 33 in underbust sits exactly between 32 and 34, and the calculator rounds halves up. The same rule gives 32 for 31 in and 30 for 29 in. If 34 feels too loose, try the 32 sister size with a larger cup.

What is DDD or F in bra sizes?

It is the US label for a 6 inch difference between bust and underbust. The UK labels the same step E and the EU labels it F, so the cup can be identical under different names.

Can I enter centimetres?

Yes. The calculator divides centimetre values by 2.54 and then applies the same rounding rules as inches. For example, 80 cm is about 31.5 in, which rounds to a 32 band.
